three ways to show your dog love, and train them too!
1) teach your pup "kisses" on cue ~ when they lick your face, say "kisses, kisses" and make a huge deal out of it. "oh, my goodness, you are amazing (she is)." you can later use this cue to redirect your dog if they are getting nippy (puppies), scared, or if you just want to get kisses!
2) teach your pup "hugs" on cue ~ this was my toby's favorite. kneel down and guide your pup into your arms with a treat (if you need one). once they are in your arms, say "hugs, hugs," again making a very big deal out of it! another terrific redirection tool, also good if you simply need a hug, and there are no humans around!
3) teach your rascal "close" or "by my side" on cue. hold a treat "by your side" and when your pooch moves into position, name it "by my side" or "close," and give them that treat. do this over and over again, until they know the word. then you've got it, a "by my side" cue. perfect for when your pup is nervous, when you see something worrisome on a walk (a speeding skateboard or off leash dog), or when you just want to be close to your pup...which is all the time!
happy valentine's day, dog lovers, show your pup you love them, today and every day of the year!
